Silica Dust Regulations in New Zealand Workplaces
Under the Health and Safety at Work (General Risk and Workplace Management) Regulations 2016, Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) must manage risks associated with hazardous substances. This includes ensuring that workers are not exposed to substances at levels exceeding prescribed exposure standards. If it’s not clear whether the concentration of a hazardous substance exceeds the relevant standards, exposure monitoring must be conducted.
The current Workplace Exposure Standard for RCS dust in New Zealand is set at 0.025 mg/m3, as revised in November 2023 by WorkSafe (WES Edition 14.1). This stringent limit aligns with international recommendations, such as those from the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), further protecting worker health.
